Claude grew up on Engle Street in Dolton and graduated from Franklin Grade School. On our block of Engle, Claude was the lone male from our class. The others were Gail Dunker, Carol O’Brien, Sharon Shelton, Sharon Hansen, and I, his next door neighbor. We used to build underground forts in the prairie behind our houses. I’ll always remember Claude for his Elvis impersonations. For those of you from Franklin, you may recall the Wednesday night dances at the Dolton Park field house for junior high-age kids. These dances were organized and run by Claude’s dad John Slager, who valiantly attempted to teach us all how to dance. Those were fun times. Rest in peace, Claude. You are fondly remembered.
