About | Janice Lee Stuelke, 78, of Waterloo, died Thursday, August 2, 2012, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after an extended illness. She was born February 1, 1934, in Adair County, Iowa, daughter of Marion and Dorothy (Beane) Hutchinson. She was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa. While attending high school, she received many honors for her typing skills. Shortly after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard G. Stuelke. She worked at the University of Iowa while her husband attended medical school. They eventually moved to West Branch where she helped her husband run their businesses while raising four children. She enjoyed having parties at their home and was a gracious hostess. In 1965, she and her family had the honor of being hosts to former President Dwight D. Eisenhower and former Vice President Richard M. Nixon. The postcards made on occasion of their visit to West Branch showed Janice walking next to former President Eisenhower. However, the caption printed on the back identified Janice as the former First Lady Mamie Eisenhower. After her children were grown, she attended the University of Iowa and was self-employed in the areas of real estate, financial services, and insurance. She also ran her own bed and breakfast. She enjoyed traveling, attending the theatre, and playing bridge. She was actively involved in politics, frequently serving as a Republican delegate to state and national conventions. Survived by two daughters and two sons: Susan (Jeff) Hora of Roxboro, North Carolina; Dixon (Sarah) Stuelke of Waterloo, Iowa; Jane (Tom) Crock of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Satre "Bill" (Elizabeth) Stuelke of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania; thirteen grandchildren; and two aunts: Reba Beane (Paull) Hunter of Golden, Colorado and Helen Beane (Rex) Wiant of Sun City West, Arizona. Preceded in death by: her parents, Marion and Dorothy Hutchinson; one grandson, Alex Hora; and her cat, CJ. |
