Joe received his commission as an Ensign with the U.S. Naval Academy class of 1981 and his MBA from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, Calif. Joe served in the Navy for nine years (active duty) and continued in the Navy Reserves for 19 years. His most recent assignment was as the Navy Emergency Pre-paredness Liaison Officer for the state of Alabama where Joe was directly involved in coordinating Defense Department support to the Gulf Coast region on multiple occasions following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and most recently, Hurricane Ike.
