Vian Collier
Class of 1972
Vian was the Tam high track and cross country stae champion for several years in a row.You can still see his pictures in the main hallway of the High School. He had natuaral leadership qualities and a strong sense of political and personal integrity.Vians father was the famous artist/photographer John Collier Jr. and his grandfather was the brilliant John Collier who began the first Bureau of Indian Affairs and was the author of the informative text book entitled Indians of the Americas.Vian believes very strongly in his grandad's legacy of Native American rights and has taken up the cause himself, arguing in the halls of the New Mexico state legislature for the religious rights of Native American people. In my opinion, Vian Collier is a great American.I have always thought that he was the partial inspiration for Forest Gump's runner phase in Tom Hank's movie because he used to run to and from College of Marin from his house in Muir beach several times a week.
