| About Me | Los Altos Hills, California Date Entered: 4/4/10 A bit over a year after taking possession of my Palo Alto home, I have just completed another move, perhaps my last - this time to the Los Altos foothills, about 2-1/2 miles away. [bigger and nicer house; easier freeway access; spectacular Bay views; a little closer to Santa Clara; a little farther from Stanford and San Francisco] Steve Jobs of Apple Computer lives somewhere in the hills above me. Premiums for fire insurance up in these brush canyons are high, but those for earthquake coverage are lower (farther from the fault line); approximately a wash. _______________________________________________ Palo Alto, California Date Entered: 2/2/09 As I anticipated, I am once again a Californian with my relocation back to Silicon Valley. I was able to get a scandalously good deal on a "distressed" property in one of the Bay Area's more upscale neighborhoods. The location could not be better - roughly equidistant from my Santa Clara office and my favorite San Francisco restaurants; within walking distance of the Stanford University campus, where I give guest lectures. My new neighbors are an interesting blend of Stanford faculty and Hewlett-Packard executives. Easy access to San Francisco International Airport is also a major boon. I can now fly directly to Tokyo, Shanghai, Singapore or Mumbai, as I increasingly must. In the other direction, I can now fly non-stop to Tel Aviv instead of having to change planes in Frankfurt, as I did when my embarkation point was Portland. (This is significant, since my entire design engineering team is now in Israel.) Last, but definitely not least, I have returned to that wonderful balmy California climate. Best wishes to all. _______________________________________ Hillsboro, Oregon Date Entered: 1/31/07 I don't know what possessed me to run "S.V. High School" through Google, but I recently did, and this site came up. Lots of interesting stuff here, but unfortunately lots of missing people. Let me do my part with a brief synopsis of the past 35 years of my life. I graduated from Syracuse University in 1973 with two B.S. degrees (Physics and Electrical Engineering). In later years I was sent back to school by my company to earn MSEE (CalTech) and Executive MBA (U.S.C.) degrees. My employer is Intel Corporation, the giant microchip manufacturer, where I'm currently a VP/Business Unit Manager (Wireless Networking). You can probably thank me (or curse me, depending on how you feel about it) for the ability of your new notebook PC to access the Internet wirelessly at your neighborhood Starbucks. I moved to the west coast in 1979 and have lived/worked here ever since, primarily in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas. Most recently, my homes have been in two nearly identical-sounding places: Hillsborough, California (on the SF peninsula, directly on top of the San Andreas earthquake fault), and now Hillsboro, Oregon (near Portland), where Intel has its biggest operations. Oregon is beautiful, but I miss the bustling activity and big city conveniences of LA and SF. A transfer back to Silicon Valley is a distinct possibility. My work requires extensive international travel to East Asia, Europe and Israel. (We are Israel's largest employer.) This travel can get pretty interesting. I have visited mainland (communist) China several times - mostly the Shanghai area, but on one visit I managed a side trip to Beijing, where I saw the Great Wall (awesome). I was in the Israeli city of Haifa in April 2006, just a few weeks before the start of the Hezbollah rocket attacks . . . a bit too close for comfort. I have been to Japan so many times I have sushi in my blood. I expect to be working until they have to carry me out on a stretcher. (I'm not the "retiring" type.) I rarely make it back to the Binghamton area any more, but it ...(read more) |
