His duty stations were: US Naval Hospital, Guam, Mariana Island (1965-66); Third Battalion Fourth Marines, Third Marine Division, Viet Nam, as a Marine Medic (1966-67); US Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1967-1969); and US Naval Reserve Sea-Bees (Construction Battalion), Cheyenne, Wyoming (1969-70). While in Viet Nam - Rudy was decorated with Good Conduct Medal from the US Navy; Navy Unit Commendation Medal - USN Naval Hospital, Guam; Purple Heart with Gold Star, Bronze Star with Valor, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for his service with the marines in the combat area . He received his draft notice to report to US Army Headquarters after his third month in Viet Nam, his company commander replied to the draft notice informing them that Rudy was already serving his country quite efficiently.
