Was awarded 4 scholarships at graduation 1965 but chose to attend Wright State University with a major in history/social studies, secondary education and a minor in religion.
Working on campus, I typed the book, Washington Gladding by Professor Dorn.
I tried to enlist after a fellow '65 student (flunking out) asked me (working the registrar's office; I typed in the grades to all the student's files) to change his 'F's' to at least 'C's' as he feared getting drafted.
I refused BUT ... touched by his fear of dying, I went to the recruiter's office to volunteer (as a typist, filing clerk) to take his place.
Of course, wearing two hearing aids, severely hearing impaired, I couldn't pass the physical ... but, thank God, I've kept checking over the years, he didn't die in Vietnam.
I was named to Dayton's Top Ten Women (Sillysal ... the clown); the youngest and first disabled woman to make the list, in 1972.
In 2006, I was named in "Who's Who Among American Women, Special 25th Anniversary Edition, 2006.
Just this past year, I was nominated to serve as Poet Laurette of Oregon. I withdrew due to health problems as accepting the honor would've required monthly events + a 2 yr. project for children lead by the laurette to encourage literacy.
My husband has cancer ... I am, currently, a caregiver for him.
