Mary Maxine (Roark) Bitner, known as Maxine to friends and loved ones, was born on a farm in Manter, Kan., on Nov. 2, 1928. She was the youngest of seven children born to Waldo and Luella Roark.
She spent her youth in Johnson, Kan., where she graduated from high school in 1948. She married Mr. Charles Douglas Bitner Jr. in Pueblo, Colo., on July 28, 1948. During their marriage, they lived in Kansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, where she worked as a homemaker, farmer, cashier and landlord.In December 2004, Maxine moved from her farm in Nickerson, Kan., to York, to be near her son and his family. She died of lung cancer on April 19, 2006, in her home.
Maxine is preceded in death by her parents, Waldo and Luella Roark; sisters, Thelma Wartman Smith and Marthina Jantz; and brothers, Clarence, LaVerne and Curtis Roark.
Maxine is survived by her daughter, Brenda K. Urice of Triangle, Va.; her son, Charles Douglas Bitner III of Clifton; and her brother, Alexander Leon Roark of Animas, N.M. Maxine has nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were at the Duncan Cemetery on April 21.
Arrangements were entrusted to Morris Safford Funeral Home.
