Army, 2 Years
I was drafted in March of 1967. Ft Leonard Wood, MO and Ft Polk, LA were my Basic and Advanced training sites. I arrived at the 9th Infantry Base Camp, Bear Cat, Vietnam, in Oct 1967. From there I was trucked to the 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry - a tiny Base Camp in the Delta region. As an infantry/rifleman, I was assigned to Bravo Company. After 3 months I volunteered for the Recon Platoon. I served as Point Man for 4 months. I was awarded A Bronze Star w/V-Device, a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and an Air Metal (for combat Air Assaults). Because I had a college degree, and could type, I was assigned as Echo Company's Company Clerk. I extended my one year Tour of Duty for an additional four months. I returned to CONUS in late December of 1968, and was released from active duty. Although my tour of duty in Vietnam was at times harrowing, it was certainly memorable.
