| About Me | "i'm condemed, it seems, to a life of restlessness and hopeless dreams...." - Todd Rundgren i am a 56 year old (as of 2011) man/child, still searching for a place in the world. i have never had a "career" or started my own family. much of this is due to, until 2007, undiagnosed depression. in the past this has contributed to behavior for which i've had to pay a steep price. now with meds and counseling i am much better, but but it is still an everyday struggle to experience the pleasures of life. i have been disabled since 2009, but am well able to take care of myself. a small social security check allows me, not everything i want but, everything i need. though i never graduated college, i've always been an auto-didact, and so with a pell grant i am now able to study towards a degree in history, first at ACC, and then to U.T. i am fortunate to have a supportive family and some good friends. i am most grateful that my ex-girlfriend (we were together 16 years), teresa, and i are extremely close, and even though we're 900 miles apart we talk often. since coming to austin the friendship of erica young and her family has been a great blessing. i have the best dog, ike, a boston terrier who gives me that unconditional affection we all need. over a year ago i joined the APDG (austin philosophical disscussion group) and that has led to some great new friends. i have played harmonica since age 16 and have recently been re-invigorated with the joy of playing music. i attend a monthly harmonica "club" and have recently started playing open stages. i have always tended to be a loner, but an unwilling one! at this point in my life a "significant other" seems a long-shot, but, as the saying goes, "scratch a cynic and you'll find a romantic underneath". with the guidance of the great "spiritual entertainer", alan watts, i have recently been studying tao and buddhist philosophies - their ways of looking at the world and life. although i have no "supernatural" religious beliefs at all, i have found these concepts most helpfull in accepting, and even reveling in, the absurdity of life. as of july 2011 i'm happy to say i no longer have an air polluting, gas -guzzling vehicle. i do almost everything i need to do by bicycle. more to come.
