Women in the Navy were called WAVES = Women's Auxillary Volunteer Emergency Service.
Women were not allowed on warships when I was in the Navy and there were only about 20 job ratings open to women. The women made up 2 - 3% of the Navy. God bless the U. S. Navy.

Bootcamp and Airman ATD School at Great Lakes - which is a cold place to be in January! Then 3 years on the USS America (CV-66), out of Norfolk - 2 years as an Air Department (V-2) DCPO, and then as an RPSN in the Chaplain's Office. In the fall of 1994 we loaded up with Army Rangers and Navy SEALs and sailed south (along with the USS Eisenhower), to put down the first Haitian coup. Then (along with the USS Theodore Roosevelt and other NATO forces), we helped end the Bosnian War in the fall of 1995. After this cruise I was part of the DECOM crew, until we turned her over to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on October 5, 1996.
