About	Bruce Eugene Newcomer, 60, of Olney, MD was born on April 11, 1951 & died of colon cancer on April 8th, 2012, at home under Hospice Care. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Joseph L. Newcomer and Anna W. Newcomer. He was the husband of Karen Joy Newcomer, for 3 years, with no children. He is survived by a sister, Linda K. Newcomer of Brinklow, MD; and 2 brothers: David L. Newcomer of Westminster, MD, and Joseph E. Newcomer of Reisterstown, MD. Along with Joe's wife Joan L. Newcomer, and niece Tamara A. Newcomer, and nephew J. David Newcomer. A graduate of Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring, MD, he became a member of the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department in 1970 up to the present, rising through the ranks in the Department. During that time span, Bruce was awarded the Spencer J. H. Brown Sr. Award for Outstanding Service in 1992, 1997, and 2011. He was awarded the Fire Mark Award in 1996 in recognition for an Outstanding Act of Valor. Bruce was also working for the Prince William County, VA, Department of Fire and Rescue Services. He was awarded The Life Saving Award for actions taken in 1988. He was recognized for 25 years of dedicated and outstanding service from June 1980 to July 2005. Bruce got involved in trains and displays. In April 2005, Bruce joined the Washington-VA-MD Garden Railroad Society, where he assisted the club in transporting and setting up the "G" scale train displays at many locations and building his own display at home. He recently joined the Masonic Lodge of Kensington-Bethesda Lodge No. 198 in May 2010. He was raised to Sublime Degree of Mastor Masons. Visitation will be at Barber Funeral Home on Thursday April 12, 2012, from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral will be held at the Lutheran Church of St. Andrew (15300 New Hampshire Ave. Silver Spring, MD 20902) on Friday April 13, 2012, at 10 am. Memorial contributions may be made to Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department (17921 Sandy Spring Rd. Sandy Spring, MD 20860) or the Lutheran Church of St. Andrew.
