Navy, 13 Years
I joined the Naval Reserve while a Junior in high school. Roger Gotcher, a classmate joined at the same time. We completed boot camp and 2 weeks at sea (Lake Michigan) the following Summer. Active duty began July after graduation in June of 1962. We were assigned to the same destroyer our of Norfolk, Va. I worked my way into sickbay as a apprentice hospital corpsman and Roger got a job in the ships laundry. Roger left active duty after the required 2 years. I reenlisted for 6 years in order to get a class A school as a hospital corpsman. I spent 3 and a half years wearing a Marine uniform (quite proudly), as a combat medic. I spent time in the National Guard after my discharge from the Navy. In total I had 8 years active duty and 5 and a half in a reserve status. I enjoyed my military experience.
