Graduation Year Class of 1985
Date of Passing Jul 22, 2023
About Jaye Marie Brown passed away peacefully on July 22, 2023. Jaye Marie was born in Tacoma, WA on March 21, 1967, moving to Redding with her family when she was just 5 years old. Jaye Marie graduated from Shasta High School in 1985 and from Gallaudet University in Washington DC in 1989. At Gallaudet she earned degrees in English, Spanish, and Psychology; she was the first student in the history of the university to earn 3 degrees at once. Jaye Marie also held a Master's degree in Education. While attending Gallaudet she met her future husband and soulmate, Calvin Brown. They married on August 6, 1988, and were blessed to have shared almost 35 years together.

Jaye Marie spent 1998-2011 teaching American Sign Language to students at Shasta College. She also taught ASL at National University. She and Calvin were very active in the deaf community in Shasta County. She loved planning Deaf Socials and arranged many infamous "game nights". She was beloved by and loved her students. She treasured the opportunity to expose the gifts and challenges of deafness to young people, building influential and lasting relationships with many of her students.

Jaye Marie is survived by her husband, Calvin, their fur babies, her father, Gary Pittenger, sisters Pam Pittenger, Jody Anderson, and Mary Marcuz, brother-in-law Jerry Marcuz, and 19 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mom, Mary Lou Pittenger, and her beloved nephew Gary Anderson.

Her family will particularly miss her sense of humor, sense of selflessness, and love for other people and animals. Her spirit is now free to be its true self without limitation. Our family has gained another angel to look over us.

Irish blessing: May the road rise to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, may the sun shine warm upon your face, and rain fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
