David Shamburger

Air Force, 25 Years
Commissioned Second Lieutenant, United States Air Force on May 29, 1979; first assignment to Laughlin AFB, Texas for Undergraduate Pilot Training, Class 81-03, earning the aeronautical rating of Pilot on February 25, 1981; first operational assignment was to Loring AFB, Maine, flying the KC-135A Stratotanker to Europe and the Middle East. Subsequent assignments included Columbus AFB Mississippi as a T-37 Flight Instructor, Randolph AFB, Texas as a Flight Instructor Trainer, Robins AFB, Georgia, as Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot flying the KC-135R Stratotanker to Europe, Asia, Africa and the Carribbean. Served six months in OPERATIONS DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM, flying 60 combat support missions into Iraq from bases in Oman and Egypt. Later served at Headquarters Air Training Command’s Flying Training Division, followed by a 2nd tour at Randolph AFB Pilot Instructor Training Center as Chief of Squadron Pilot Upgrade Section. Final assignment was at the Lackland AFB, Texas Inter-American Air Force Academy (IAAFA) as Flight and Squadron Commander. Retired in 2004 as USAF Command Pilot with over 4,500 flying hours and the Master Flight Instructor Certificate. Earned citations include four Meritorious Service Medals, three Combat Air Medals, Aerial Achievement Medal, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.

Received my AF commission on graduation day at UGA and began an adventure that took me to quite a few places around the world---some of which I even wanted to visit. I became a pilot and logged nearly 5000 hours of flying time in C-130, C-7A tactical airlift aircraft including a few hundred hours in the UH-60 helicopter. I spent two tours in Southeast Asia (Vietnam and Thailand). Following that, I spent a few years in Texas, Germany, Eglin AFB, FL and Scott AFB, Il. I commanded a squadron at Eglin and served on the Military Airlift Command headquarters staff in Illinois. Retired as a colonel in 1990 with 26 years of service. I enjoyed the entire experience.

Spent most of my time operating submarines and was assigned to four different subs while in the navy. Was involved in the recognition of the USS Birmingham (SSN-696) in November 1996 during the city's Veteran's Day celebrations, just before she was decommissioned in spring of 1997. Left the Navy at the rank of Choef {etty Officed (Submarines) and was awarded the Navy Commendation medal and four Navy Achievement Medals.
