Received my 1966 Valintine Day Letter from President Johnson. Enlisted Feb. 10, 1966 and discharged Jan. 22, 1970 as a Staff Sargent SSG E-6.
Basic Training was at Ft. Knox, KY and Advanced Training in Microwave Radio Repair at Ft. Monmouth, NJ.
Stationed in Germany for 3 years in Signal Corp. One year at Munich Microwave Radio Station in Co B, 102nd Sig. Bn. and 2 years in Co. C, 68th Sig. Bn. with 6 months at Co. Hq in Supply waiting for Army and NATO Security Clearances. Then 1.5 years in charge of Single Sideband Radio Station at Pfullendorf attached to 2nd USA MSL DET a Warhead Custotial Unit in support of the German 10th Panzer Grenidiar Div.'s 10th Artillary/Rocket Bn

Retirement Biography for Chief Hospital Corpsman John M. Griffin
Chief Griffin is a 27-year veteran of the United States Navy. He began his career in June of 1978, 3 weeks out of high school in Saranac, Michigan. After attending Recruit Training and Hospital Corpsman “A†School in Great Lakes, Illinois he attended the Marine Corps’ Field Medical Service School in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina prior to reporting to his first permanent duty station: Naval Regional Medical Center Charleston, South Carolina.
Chief Griffin assigned to the Intensive Care Unit where he was in the first group of Corpsman to earn the Critical Care NEC thru rigorous on the job training and testing.
Chief Griffin was then ordered to report to the Fleet Marine Force in Okinawa, Japan in October of 1980. His initial assignment was to the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion at Camp Hansen in Okinawa where he deployed throughout the Marianas and the Far East providing humanitarian medical and dental care. From there he was assigned to the 3rd Marine Division at Camp Schwab, Okinawa.
Upon his return to the United States in October of 1981, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he remained until his discharge from active duty in June 1982 as a Second Class Petty Officer.
After 2 years in the Inactive Reserve, Chief Griffin affiliated with the active Naval Reserve in October of 1984 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Chief Griffin was married in June of 1985 and in October of that same year; he was recalled to Active Duty in the Training and Administration of Reserves program and was ordered to Naval Reserve Center Ogden, Utah.
In July of 1990, he transferred to the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, Montgomery, Alabama and from there he was selected as the Naval Reserve Recruiting Command’s (CNRRC) medical representative at the Naval Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) in Washington DC. His primary mission was conducting physical qualifications and review for waivers of enlistment for applicants and retention of Navy and Marine Corps members with disqualifying medical conditions. In addition, he was the CNRRC liaison for Medical Plans and Policy at BUMED and the Pentagon and represented the Navy and Marine Corps Reserves on a tri-service panel for standardization of disqualifying conditions at the Pentagon.
In February 1997, he was selected to attend the Advanced Medical Administrative Course, NEC 8424, in San Diego, California where he graduated at the top of his class achieving one of the highest scores ever from the school. Upon graduation in September, he reported back to his first duty station; Naval Hospital Charleston, South Carolina where he served as the Command Reserve Liaison Officer as well as Assistant Department Head for Staff Education and Training.
In November of 1999, after a short 2-year tour in Charleston, he was requested to report to Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center Orlando, Florida from where he had intended to retire. However, at the end of this tour, Chief Griffin was personally requested by the Command Master Chief, Headquarters, Naval Reserve Forces Command, (CNRFC) to remain on active duty and report to the staff of CNRFC in New Orleans, Louisiana. His mandate was to fix a failing program as the Training Program Manager for Commissioned Officers and enlisted personnel in the medical, dental and religious program fields; In particular, to recruit and manage members attached to Marine Corps units. This was a critical training program for those attached to the Marine Corps field units deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Chief Griffin finished his final tour in New Orleans on 25 August 2005, days before Hurricane Katrina devastated the City. He ultimately retired from service on 31 January 2006. His awards include the Navy Commendation Medal (Gold Star in lieu of third award), the Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal (Large Silver and Bronze Stars in lieu of seventh award) and numerous other Campaign and Service Awards.
Chief Griffin has been married for 24 years to the former Lacie Ann Griffin ne’ Chapman of Sheridan, Michigan. They have two wonderful children: Tonia Rae (23) and Ariana Marie (17); He will return to join his family and resides in Groveland, Florida.
