About Me Hmmmm......ok, I am going to be a bit lazy and just plug in an "update".....and leave what we had here before....here! Presumably, no one cares to scroll down and keep reading the "old" update! But.....hey, its your free time! What follows is something that I just shared with Barbara Lacy (don't you love her "buttercup" email address!). She and the others on the committee are so great to be organizing the reunion once again....and I am giving a big shout out "thank you" now and will repeat when we all get together! Can't wait! Barbara says that an update is "on its way"! Anyway, here is my update on me and my family: A) The kids are great! Annika (22) graduated from Gordon College and couldn’t be happier! teaching in a wonderful boutique school in Mass (Apple Orchard………a bit Reggio, a bit Waldorf, a bit Montessori) for preschoolers. Healthy and happy and going steady with a lovely young Christian who has already “privately” asked our blessing! More story to tell on that one! Sebastian (18) is excited about going to St. Andrews (in Scotland! Remember, he was born in the UK), has a summer job in London lined up (Private Equity firm), is playing a high level of chess, squash, tennis and golf…..and couldn’t be happier either! b) Dorthe is as busy as over….mostly focused on her charitable Boards (3 anti-trafficking; one focused on Fistula in Africa and other emerging markets) and academic Boards (head of Governance at Portledge and Gordon)…..and then playing a fair amount of golf and tennis. Leading ALPHA for the Church and is on the NY ALPHA Board. We swim all year round in what is cold water in the warmest of times….and near freezing now! c) My profile changes pretty rapidly, but is fundamentally a Board portfolio. I termed off my Insurance Board (9 years Chair of QBE NA), but am now Chairman of Ellig Group (Global C-suite search), Reference Point, (Managing consulting), TLC Lions PLC (Corporate Culture Consulting), Thinking PLC (Ed Tech), DevClever/Veative PLC (EdTech)……and a few others that reflect my investment in them. I'm considering one other (interestingly, in the Ukraine, for the EBRD), but…..we will have to see! What else? We sold our house to give us some flexibility (lots of gravitational pull to move back to London), but we won’t go anywhere until after Sebastian graduates in June! Renting on Centre island for the time being, but……have a tentative bid on a small waterfront house in Northport as a possible “USA footprint”! Next year is likely to be a year of adventure for Dorthe and me…..balancing time between Denmark, London, USA and the Dominican Republic. Perhaps, after that rather peripatetic year, we will settle on something a bit more permanent for ’24/’25! Who knows! That’s the adventure! Whew! that’s it! (oh……..and, the year was a bit special in that I received an honor from King Charles in early December…..”Fellow of the Community” for my contributions over the last 20 years! Interestingly, that may well engage me for the ext 10 as well as we work to redefine the Business in the Community (of which I used to serve on the Board and I will now lead the “Fellows”!). (The "old news" follows): I filled this in once before, but it appears to be lost in the system. Or, if it resurfaces, I certainly hope that there aren't too many differences between that and this iteration! How does one "summarize" 40 years! Generalizing, I have been blessed. On the personal front, was married a couple of times (each for 9 years or so. Great gals, but never quite right and no children with either). Finally met the "right one" @26 years ago and couldn't be happier! Two children (one 17 and one 12; girl and boy in that order!) and both are wonderful (even if I am biased!). Annika and Sebastian. My wife, Dorthe (Danish) is fantastic, with a heart of gold and spends the majority of her time on several charitable Boards (anti-trafficking; fistula, Opportunity International) and has just started a company focused on programs of awareness taught through public and private High Schools. On the professional side, I am a bit of a hybrid, large-company/entreprenuer! 28 years with Citi, living in 8 countries around the world, 10 years with Lloyds Banking Group; 5 years with ANZ...all the while starting nearly 16 private companies. Everything from producing movies, LPs (remember those?!), starting everything from fitness clubs and vacation clubs to service companies providing cost controls for Law Firms and the service industry. Currently CEO of ANZ for the Americas, Chairman of QBE, NA and joining several other private companies boards for 2018. In the transition from almost always (last 20 years) being in the executive office to doing full-time Boards. I guess that that is about it! Faith is a huge part of our lives, as is doing all that we can on the social justice front. As a family, we love boating, tennis and golf on the active front......and a bit of everything else opportunistically! Looking forward to seeing everyone next year! Flash update: now.....July 2020 (how time flies!): Full time “Board professional” now.....Chairing QBE NA (Australian P&C Insurer), Chairing Reference Point (Management Consultant), Chairing Medicus (PPO), Chairing FIMBA (European Holding) and Chairing The Social Book Club (UK, online library for schools), plus the usual school and associa...(read more)
