Walter Waite
Class of 1965
Navy, 7 Years
Walt enlisted in the Navy while in his senior year at Ridley, went to boot camp at Great Lakes near Chicago and spent more than a year on a destroyer before he was sent to Valleta, Malta where he began his tour aboard the aircraft carrier USS AMERICA CVA-66. When the Six Day war began in June 1967, AMERICA went to full alert and responded when Israel attacked the USS Liberty near the Gaza Strip. "Seeing the damage to Liberty and all the dead and wounded caused all of us to grow up that day". 1968 was spent in Vietnam followed by a circumnavigation of the globe and visits to about 30 countries. His greatest experience while in the Navy was "driving the boat". All of Walt's bridge watches were spent at the helm of the newest carrier in the Navy, an incredible experience for a 19 year old. His proudest moment came in 2008. Walt and a small group of AMERICA veterans sucessfully persuaded the Navy to build a new USS AMERICA which will be commissioned in 2013.
