About Me | "If you work this hard for someone else imagine what you can do for yourself" was a quote that LaWanda White never forgot as she walked back across the 7th floor of the Radio-One headquarters in Lanham, MD where she was hired to intern as a Promotions and Marketing Assistant. She was 19 and during her first internship, LaWanda was responsible for supporting 3 radio stations. But unlike many of the other students, she wasn't in it for the perks and she was compelled to learn the ropes. LaWanda worked with multiple stations and participated in dj meetings, supported talent, managed events and coordinated promotions for national events such as: Stone Soul Picnic and The Russ Parr Bus Tour. By the end of her non-paying internship, the department sent her off with a going away card signed by many including the General Manager and a one hundred dollar bill, something that had never been done before. Not much for many, but for LaWanda, this was a clear sign that she had made an impression. Hailing from Prince George County, VA, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Psychology from Old Dominion University. She has worked for Rhodes Communications an international public relations firm and spearheaded the public relations divisions of two companies including the St. Louis Black Pages under Harvard MBA, Howard Denson and Dream Little Dreamer under platinum-recording songwriter, Alisha "M'Jestie" Brooks. Facing challenges in the job market like many of her peers, LaWanda went against the grain, took the advice of her internship coordinator and many others to build an iconic PR music and entertainment public relations brand launching IndependentlyPR in October 2011. At only 22 and quickly gaining recognition in the Tidewater region, she was invited to her alma mater to speak to students about PR as a young entrepreneur. A few months later, LaWanda relocated to Washington DC to continue her career in event management and PR. Juggling her position at Georgetown University and her own business, LaWanda was selected as a Top 30 Under 30 honoree by WKYS 93.9 for the DC, Maryland and Virginia area along with two of her clients in March 2012. She is also a proud member of Power 30 Under 30 and Women In PR. Recently, she has also branched out into other creative outlets founding The Launch Party, an online streaming radio show on blis.fm where "PR With A Funky Twist of Comedy" with her comedic co-host, Capitol T. As well as being the co-founder of a professional networking organization, Young Urban Professionals (YUPies) that is growing quickly in the DMV area and has already caught the attention of WPGC's 95.5 radio station. To date, LaWanda has been fortunate to assist in building bridges for many up and coming talent as well as expanding her network to handle the PR for recognized industry artists including: the legendary Rakim, Tanya Blount, No Malice from the Clipse, Maino, Ben Tankard and Kevin Shine to name a few. In entering IndependentlyPR's sophomore year the organization has also volunteered its services to benefit non-profit organizations such as Face Up 2 Cancer, the Susan G. Komen Foundati...(read more) |
