About Me Ronald E. Grieson, PhD Professor Emeritus, University of California Research Focus Public Finance/Economics, Taxation, General Equilibrium, Growth, Applied Microeconomics, Public Policy, Cost-Benefit, Anti-Trust and Regulation, Energy, Urban & Real Estate Economics, and International Trade & Finance. General Research Prior to coming to UCSC, Professor Grieson held professorships MIT, Columbia, and Princeton Universities. A former member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Urban Economics (1976-1986). Professor Grieson has edited several books on urban and public economics, and antitrust & regulation, as well as published numerous articles in these and other areas. He edited Public and Urban Economics: Essays in Honor of William S. Vickrey . He has been invited to lecture extensively at Universities, Research Foundations and meetings { The Econometric Society, etc.} in those areas; and to participate in International Conferences on public and international finance. He has organized conferences on antitrust & regulation and international trade & finance at UCSC; Directed MIT's Special Summer Program in Urban and Public Economics (1970-80); Directed the ORA in Public and Applied Economics; Chaired the Committee on Rules, Jurisdiction and Elections; served as an economic consultant to governmental and academic bodies, including: the Center for Urban Policy Analysis, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Department of Labor, the Central Bank and the University of Uruguay, etc.; and consulted to research & consulting (including DRI) and Law firms, including substantial expert testimony.. He has had the privilege of being the colleague of/ working with Nobel Laureates (by prize date): Paul Samuelson, Franco Modigliani, Robert Solow, William Vickrey, Robert Mundell, Joseph Stiglitz , Robert Engle and Edmund Phelps. Selected Research His most influential and cited works have been on: optimal regional commodity taxation and the optimal taxation of public goods; the effects and optimal levels of capital taxation on growth and output; the mechanisms and optimality of land, and also, structure allocation and externalities; the effects of property taxes; and the effects of taxation on investment. Interests Art and Architecture (especially contemporary); Design: Artifacts, etc.: Diplomatic, Political & Military History and Strategy; Law and Justice; Public Policy; Contemporary Civilization; Philosophy, Logic, Kant, Ethical & Cultural Humanism; Metaphysics, Unitarianism & Deism; Urban Planning; Real Estate; Performance Automobiles; Dogs and all Animals. Born: Bank Street, West Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City. Ancestry: Hans W. Griese, derer von Werpup; Born: Bremen, De. Family Ancestry: Huguenot (French Reform) who departed France for Geneve after the repeal of the Edict of Nantes. The name en France was most probably Gries {pronounced as Gris en francais} and became Griese {pronounced as Griese en fr..} in Geneve or after subsequent migration to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.
