Richard Pulin

Class of 1959

I should start by introducing myself to you.....I'm Richard Pulin (Rich).
I am considered a jazz-education pioneer, dating all the way back
to....1960! The 'qualifier', is that exactly one year after graduating from Plainedge,(1959) I auditioned for and was hired to play trombone in the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra by the brilliant
trombonist-bandleader of The Tommy Dorsey Band, Warren Covington,
to become the youngest trombonist ever to play in that band.....18!
So commenced my jazz education, by osmosis and OJT...
At that time jazz education was a luxury, taught locally in a few places..
The eventual jazz-ed giants, Berklee, and U. of N. Texas, were just
about to 'sprout wings', but hadn't quite reached that point in '60'!

Fast forward to 1992, when I began jazz-ed consultation with The Clark
County School District (Las Vegas & surrounding area)...
This year began the 23rd year of our relationship, and
our early childhood activities have streamlined to
include a wonderful video jazz history, primarily
for elementary & middle school students!
This video history focusses strongly on
Louis Armstrong, and the children LOVE
Frequently, the students thank me for
introducing them to jazz and tell me they
will watch more jazz on youtube, parents

The foundation and I also have other jazz-ed
subjects for the high school students,
particularly those that are contemplating a career
in professional music...
For these students, we have a very novel songwriting
seminar based on traditional songwriting with pencil
and manuscript paper...we focus on The Great American
Songbook style of writing, and my spin on expanding the
songbook in an 'out-of-the-box 2015 style and manner...

Very Kindly Submitted,
