After graduating from the U. S. Naval Academy in June of 1963, I completed flight training and joined my first squadron aboard the USS Independence for a combat cruise in 1965 flying the A4 Skyhawk. During that cruise I was the first pilot of the war to be shot down in and subsequently recovered from North Vietnam, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart in the process. After two Mediterranean cruises and a tour at the Naval Academy, I began my second sea-duty tour flying the A7 Corsair II. However, after surviving the crash of the Search and Rescure aircraft I was in as an observer, when the pilot, who was killed, flew us into a ridgelline at 10,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, I left the navy in 1973.
