Charles C. Birkhimer, age 88, of Columbus, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at Riverside Hospital. Son of Leonard and Grace Gleason Birkhimer. Born July 28, 1917 in Newton Township, Pike County, Oh. Survived by his wife, Hazel L. Wagner Birkhimer of 56 years; daughter, Dora M. (Bob) Birkhimer Hutchens of Elizabethton, Tenn.; cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by sister Nancy, brothers John and Purle, half-brothers Frank and Albert and half-sister Mable. Employed by New York Central, Penn Central and Conrail Railroads, retired in 1977 after 36 years as Operator/Leverman. 1935 graduate of Piketon High School. World War II U.S. Army Veteran. Member of Karl Road Baptist Church. Past Master of Linden Lodge F&AM. Past High Priest of Linden Chapter Royal Arch Masons (now Community Chapter). Past President of 11th Capitular District Officers' Assoc. Past Illustrious Master of West Gate Council. Member of Mt. Vernon Commandery. Member of Ohio Lodge of Research. 40 year member of Linden Heights Chapter Order of Eastern Star (now Triangle Chapter). Past Royal Patron of Pallas Court Order of Amaranth (now Columbus Court). Friends may call at the MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 East Schrock Road, Westerville, Wednesday 6-8 p.m., where service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 13, 2006. Pastor Lynda Chambers officiating. Interment Kingwood Memorial Cemetery. Friends, if they wish, may donate to the charity of your choice in his memory.

Completed four deployments to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans; saw many interesting places such as South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, Pakistan, and others; achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer (E-7) in 1986; retired in June 1994.

Retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer E-8 Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist(SW). stationed on both East coast and west coast, saw the world, and made many deployments. Certified Sky Diver/Scuba Diver. Retired July 1994 and went to work for the Department of Homeland Security Citizenship & Immigration Services as a Immigrations Officer. Married and have three children, 2 girls and a boy all grown and left the nest.
