Martha Wells (Williams)
Class of 1978
Navy, 4 Years
USS Shenandoah AD44 Plankowner (commissioning crew member) Storekeeper (SK2)- destroyer repair parts to be used by my destroyer tender (repairing vessel).
Several Ribbons including Sea Service (underway crusing ship East Coast into Mediterranean and Caribbean), Good Conduct, Battle E.
Letter of Commendation for Direct Staff to Repair Officer. Specially interviewed, researched or vetted, and selected for first Mediterranean cruise.
On Full Alert off coast of Sicily for Libyan flyover/bombing.
End of Pioneering Shipboard Women. First 2 years Aboard Ship 10:130 ratio female:male in crew of 1300 (100 female total). If we Finished Proving Women as valid Shipboard Crew, ship was planned to go to 40:60 female:male. Much Unknown remained although we were definitely Not the Beginning Shipboard Female Pioneers. MUCH Prejudice abd Harassment Abounded. This was Especially So because it was known if we Finished Proving Women as Vital Seagoing Crew Members the ratio was to shift from 10:130 to 40:60.
Made E5 in 4 years despite first years refusing to give me much above 3.6 (on 4.0 scale), because of fight against Sexual Demand Harassment.
Discharged in December '86 as Plankowner Departing, to embrace my next Life Calling of discharge, civilian job, church, Godly dating into marriage, and childbirth at age 30. Discharged at age 26.5, and met Next Life Calling at age 30.
Did not have family network nor physical health sufficient to Do Both Well.
