| Favorite School Memory | Here's one. I had a crush on a girl named Brooke in 7th or 8th Grade. But I was an immature jr. high boy about it. I told some kids that we were “going out†but this was not at all the case. I had barely talked to her. They asked me why they hadn’t seen us together and I said that Brooke and I wanted to “keep it a secret†(a wishful fantasy). Well, one day the whole class was sitting at desks in the gym, about to take a standardized test. Brooke comes in and makes her way across the gym. All the kids I’d been talking to start jeering her and trying to get her to admit that she liked me. Oh no. It got more and more intense and other kids in the class started joining it. She was teased mercilessly for several minutes in front of the whole class. I just wanted to pretend that she was my girlfriend. | About Me | Oh boy. I moved from Pelham 1 month into 9th grade and did high school at a Boston-area prep school. It was all boys and we had to a wear jacket and tie every day. Then I went to a liberal arts college in MN called Carleton and loved it. I majored in Psychology, but I really threw myself into theater. I played 5-6 leading roles each year and met my wife Sydney in a student-run Summer Stock company there. (Sydney grew up in Chelsea, Manhattan and is now a theater history professor here in Utah) I graduated and made a meager living on stages in Minneapolis & Seattle as an actor for about 11 years. Then Sydney moved us to Utah, I tackled stage 3 colon cancer and I became a father, all in the same 18-month period. Life changed. Outside of that period I’ve acted in professional theaters here in Salt Lake City, but this town’s not big enough to supply me with 12 months of work a year. So I flew back east to write a walking guidebook to NYC and worked as a part-time graphic designer for 3 years. I recently reconnected with my Psych roots from college and started in a Developmental PhD program here at the University of Utah, studying storytelling and moral development. I’ll become a father again in May, but I wonâ&eur...(read more) |
