He was drafted in the winter of 1968 and was wounded badly the day before Thanksgiving 1968. He spent the rest of his service time having the surgeries and rehab necessary for him to have a normal life.
Sadly he passed away in March of 2015 of lung cancer.

Served 26 years in varied assignments including aircraft maintenance, process automation, avionics procurement, capability simulation, new systems testing, and Command. Retired in the grade of Colonel.

Enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in March,1969.Completed 13 week basic training at Cape May,New Jersey.11 months stationed at Sault Ste.Marie,Mi.Attended 16 week Gunners Mate School(appointed class leader) on Governors Island,New York City.Upon graduation, was assigned as port safety inspector at Captain of the Port,Chicago,Ill.concerning enforcent of Fed.regs.concerning Hazarous cargo,port & foreign ship inspections and oil pollution cases.In charge of our indoor small arms firing range.Our unit received the Federal top Coast Unit award for prosecution of oil pollution cases.Recived a 2 1/2 mo.early out(totally unheard of due to lack of personnel) in Jan.1973 for excellent service marks to finish up my Business Administration degree at the U of Wi-Whitewater.

Currently PO 1st Class assigned to the USS Eisenhower out of Norfolk, VA. Finished 2nd tour of Persian Gulf 8/1/09. One of many destroyers in Persian Gulf at start of Gulf War. Lives in Norfolk with wife, 2 children and 3 stepchildren, Wife Valerie also a PO 1st Class. John is head of the machine shop on the Eisenhower. Proud of what he does for God and his country.

Our Oregon High School military alumni are some of the most outstanding people we know and this page recognizes them and everything they have done! Not everyone gets to come home for the holidays and we want our Oregon High School Military to know that they are loved and appreciated.
