Graduation Year Class of 1977
Date of Passing Nov 03, 2018
About LEXINGTON: Steve Shoenfelt was all about experiencing life to the fullest. Front row seats at Bruce Springsteen concerts, dining at five star restaurants and ordering the most unique item on the menu, or spending the entire week at music festivals, Steve embraced those life experiences. More than making great memories, Steve was passionate in cultivating lifelong friendships. A natural encourager he chose to see the potential in others instead of their imperfections. Steven D. Shoenfelt, 59, of Lexington passed away unexpectedly Saturday, November 3, 2018 in Virginia.
The son of Jim and Nancy (Arnold) Shoenfelt, Steve was born September 7, 1959 in Mansfield. He graduated from Ontario High School in 1977 where he was a member of the swim team and also played saxophone in the marching band. Steve graduated from Miami University with a bachelor's degree in Marketing. He continued his education at Ashland University where he earned a bachelor's degree in Education. More recently Steve acquired his associate's degree in nursing from North Central State College and was currently enrolled in the nursing program at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Steve currently worked at OhioHealth Hospital Mansfield as a nurse.
Steve's passion for swimming and people, made him a truly great swim coach. Demanding, Steve held the line when it came to discipline and respect but he was always supportive of his swimmers. In 1986 Steve founded the Mansfield Waves Swim Team where he coached roughly 150 kids each year. Steve had also coached for Hudson High School, the Dublin Community Center, Massillon Perry High School, Clear Fork Swim Club and most recently was the head swim coach for Mansfield Senior High School.
Steve's music collection was massive. He loved all genres, especially experiencing live performances. If Steve was going to a concert, he was usually near the stage. From Bruce Springsteen to 21 Pilots, Steve's vast CD and vinyl collection was ever expanding.
He truly enjoyed food and appreciated not only the taste, but the presentation of a well thought dish. When dining out he'd try something different, just for the experience. He enjoyed cooking and wasn't afraid to tackle a home cooked gourmet meal.
Steve had a way with words and understood the value of encouraging others. He'd often take the time to write uplifting letters to family and friends.
Steve is survived by his parents Jim and Nancy Shoenfelt of Lexington; sister Dee (David) Johnson of Hamilton; niece Sarah Johnson and nephew Jack Johnson; aunts and uncle Jane (Phil) Plummer, Janet Griffeth, Marilyn Arnold, Linda Black, Peggy Shoenfelt, and Vilena Shoenfelt; special cousin Melinda (Gary) Buenemann; along with numerous cousins, extended family and a large circle of close friends.
