About Carolyn Pickell (married surname: Backman), Northwood HS class of 1960, died of pancreatic cancer on April 15, 2024 at her home in Springfield, VA. She was editor, 1959-1960, of Northwood’s newspaper, The Red and Black, and was a member of the National Honor Society and the Quill and Scroll Society for high school journalists. Carolyn earned her B.A. from George Washington University in American Studies, and later earned a master’s degree from GW in math education. After college, she married Sam Backman, lived in Olney, MD and had 2 children, Stephanie and Jordan. Sam’s work in defense logistics led to the family moving to Heidelberg, Germany for several years for his assignment for the US. Carolyn taught on the military base. After returning to the DC area, the family moved to Springfield, VA, and Carolyn worked as a high school math teacher for Fairfax County. In retirement, she administered lifelong learning programs and led a memoir writing group at her local Jewish Community Center.
