About | I sincerely regret to inform you that Coach Lacey Smith is no longer with us. He was not only a good teacher but one many looked up to for assistance and guidance outside of the school environment. He came to Northside High School educated with a B.A. and M.A., from Arkansas AM&N and The University of Arkansas. He was on the staff as a member of the Social Studies department and the sports department. The year 1976 was Coach Lacey’s first season as the head coach of Northside’s football team. It was in 1976 that Northside Football won the Music Bowl. OBITUARY Lacey Smith, Jr., 77, passed away peacefully Friday, December 31, 2021. Lacey was born to Mary Lee and Lacey Smith, Sr., on August 4, 1944. He was a proud 1962 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. Lacey earned a bachelor's degree from Mississippi Industrial College. He also earned a master's degree from Arkansas State University. Lacey was a memorable teacher and beloved football coach for 43 years. He won local and state championships and was recognized as Coach of the Year. Lacey left to cherish fond memories: his adored wife, Cathelia Smith, his loving children, Stephanie Smith and Bobby Smith II, two brothers, Howard Smith and Bobby Smith I, two sisters, Terri Smith and Renee Smith, five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of loving family members and friends. Services are as follows: Visitation Friday, January 14, 2022, from 4 pm to 7 pm. Funeral Service: Saturday, January 15, 2022, at 12 pm. Both services will be at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church 620 Parkrose Avenue Memphis, TN 38109. Phone: (901) 785-1612 Interment at Elmwood Cemetery. He loved his players & students to no end. He was like a Father figure to many of us at Northside High School. He taught us to love & respect each other. It didn't matter if it was the locker room or , the classroom. He was very passionate about lessons he taught us. He motivated, mentored & encouraged us to be confident & excell with a purpose. He would say "It's not where you're from but what you accomplish & finish strong with. He was most beloved by many of us & we will miss him. “ |
