Class of 1976
Navy, 20+ Years
I had a wonderful 20 year career in the US Navy which started on Jul 1, 1976. I was stationed in San Diego, CA on various ships and shore stations for the majority of my 20 years. One of the ships I served on made a homeport shift to Sasebo, JA so I did spend 9 mos there. Throughout my 20 years I made serveral deployments overseas and got to visit places in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Australia. I retired from the Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer in June 1996. While in the Navy I earned a BS degree in Computer Science which helped leapfrog my next career in IT. I currently reside in Huntersville, NC and work as a Sr BI Engineer for LendingTree.com.

First of all, I went to NE Junior High School for the 8th & 9th grades while it was in portable classrooms.
Anyway, the Broward County Draft Board sent me an offer I could not refuse in 1966. During the induction process, they gave aptitude tests. Afterwards, an Army Recruiter told me I “had an aptitude for electronics” and if I enlisted for 3 years they would send me to a special school. Fortunately, I took the recruiter up on the offer and ended up in a Nike Hercules Missile unit in Germany. That experience changed my life and motivated me to attend college on the GI Bill.
My only regrets were that I lost a few friends in Vietnam who were not so fortunate. For years I felt guilty that I, somehow, could have saved their lives if I had been in Vietnam with them.
