Richard James Murphy
Class of 1969
Army, 35 Years
LTC Richard Murphy had a "varied" military career. Originally enlisting in the USNR in Quincy he opted out of his contract when the USN transferred the Small Boat (ie Patrol Boats) to the Vietnamese Military. After graduation he enlisted in the MAANNG as an armorer on jet fighter aircraft. In 1979 he enlisted in the NJNG as an armorer on attack helicopters. Already a pilot, he was in the process of going to flight school for helicopters when the Army invoked an maximum age of 27.5 for new pilot candidates. He was instead offered to attend OCS. He was the Outstanding Graduate of his class and attended the Armor Basic Course at Ft. Knox Ky. He served as a scout platoon leader, mortor officer and Troop XO before transferrring to the Infantry. As an infantry officer he commanded an AIrborne, Long Range Surveillance Detachment. He attended Airborne School, Jump Master School, Long Range Surveillance Course at Ranger, and Air Assault School. At the completion of his tour of command he transferred to the USAR and became a Basic Training Company Commander, later, S3, Bn Xo and Battalion Commander. He changed careers field again and move to USASOC in Civil Affairs/Psychological Operations and attended the CIvil Affairs Course at the JFK Special Warfare Center at Ft. Bragg. He would deploy to Iraq as part of the US invasion force in 2003 and command a detachment of Civil Affairs Operators. In 2009 he was assigned to United States Africa Command in Stuttgart Germany as part of the G5 Division working humanitarian assistance missions in more than a dozen conflict zones in Africa. He retired from active duty in Nov 2012. He has been awarded the Bronze Star and three campaign ribbons for Iraq and two Meritorious Service Medals for his work in Africa.
