Stanley E Anderson
Class of 1959
Air Force, 20 Years

Enlisting in the Air Force in May, 1959 (I missed NBHS graduation by about a week), following basic training and tech school, I spent six years at Langley AFB, VA, 1960-66, including four years at the Hq Tactical Air Command Command Post. Then Aug 66 – Aug 67 at the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing, DaNang AB, Vietnam as Admin/Top Secret Control NCO in the Tactical Unit Operations Center. Returned to Patrick AFB, FL I worked on Project Apollo, 1967-71, as NCO-In-Charge (functionally the facilities manager among other duties) of the Aircraft Operations Control Center (AOCC) deploying eight Apollo Range Instrumentation Aircraft (ARIA) around the world recording telemetry from the Apollo spacecraft and relaying astronaut voices to Houston. The AOCC, known in the NASA world as “ARIA Control”, was listed by NASA as their #3 Communications control center because the ARIA comprised 30 percent of their near-earth Manned Space Flight Network. The ARIA were the prime relay stations for all Apollo spacecraft following reentry blackout. I “flew a console” during the Apollo 4 thru 14 missions before leaving the program to cross-train into computer programming. Following programming tech school, I spent two years at Travis AFB, CA, 1971-73, then on to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Belgium, 1973-77, a multi-service, multi-national installation. Off-duty, I followed my two oldest sons as they went from Cub Scouts into a British Scout troop and spent three years as Assistant and a year as Leader of the troop that had 30 boys from eight countries and spoke six different languages, English, French, German, Dutch, Italian and Turkish. Fortunately, they all spoke English or French as a primary or secondary language. Returning from Belgium to Cannon AFB, NM, in 1977, I finished my Air Force Career as NCOIC of Base Data Automation retiring as a Master Sergeant (E-7) Computer Systems Superintendent in June 1979.
