About Nicolina "Nickie" Mazzarelli, 70, of Newburgh, died Sunday, April 26, 2009.

The daughter of the late Vito Gironda and the late Catherine Aiello Gironda, she was born August 27, 1938 in Port Chester, NY.

She was employed at the City of Newburgh Tax Office, Newburgh Board of Education Tax Office, and was the owner of "The Landscape Home & Garden Center". She graduated from Newburgh Free Academy in 1956. She was a member of Alpha Sigma Chi Society.

A family statement reads: Nickie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose greatest joy came from spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. Nickie was the center point for the 14 family members and friends gathering every Tuesday at her home for a home cooked meal. Nickie's famous spaghetti sauce was known in the area and was everyone's favorite."

She married Gene Mazzarelli, who survives at home, on April 19, 1959 at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh. She is also survived by her children: Lisa and Richard Wendel of Newburgh, Gina Mazzarelli and Lary Rothstein of New Windsor, and Mark and Tami Mazzarelli of Newburgh; grandchildren: Richard Jr., Nicole, and Lauren Wendel, Zachary, Jack and Alex Mazzarelli, all reside with their parents in Newburgh; nieces and nephews: Gus Siko, Tom Ponesse III, Vito Ponesse, Anthony Ponesse, Richard Ponesse, Cathy Benfer, and Steven Ponesse; brother-in-law, Thomas Ponesse, Jr. She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Rose Ponesse.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 28, from 4-8 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Home, 481 Gidney, Ave., Newburgh.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, April 29, at Sacred Heart Church, Robinson Ave., Newburgh. Entombment will be in Cedar Hill Mausoleum, Rose Room.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, PO Box 7247-0260, Philadelphia, PA 19170-0260.
