Carl Schoelkopf
Class of 1952
Army, 2 Years
A Brief Bio of Carl Schoelkopf
My life began near Lenox, Macomb County, Michigan, in 1934. Father was a cattleman, mostly dairy. After graduation from Mt. Clemens High School in 1952, I served in the army until 1955. As a Korean War veteran, the G.I. Bill gave me the opportunity to graduate college at San Diego State. Later I did graduate work at Stanford, Sacramento and Chico State Universities.
In my earliest years I liked poetry and read quite a bit, but my work in law enforcement and education kept me too busy to devote much time to writing. Now I work more diligently at it with the encouragement of friends
After retiring, I began writing poetry, short stories and other things which please me. I use the name Carlos Sc. Since childhood some of my friends called me Carlos, so I use that name in my writing. The shortened version makes it easier on everyone.
My home for the past 44 years has been Shasta County, so I am quite familiar with the area and history of Northern California and Southern Oregon. I enjoy reading it and writing about it.
Some of my work is posted there. I am currently studying HTML, so maybe the blog will improve with time.

Navy, 8 Years
Joined the navy reserves in 1989 with the Sigonella 0573 unit at Selfridge. Was called up for active duty in September 1990 for Desert Shield. Went to Sicily, Italy. the base there is named Sigonella. I was there until April 1991. I was lucky enough to have worked with my twin sister, Deb Colllins Slayton. She was active duty navy, on a ship the USS Yellowstone which came into the port that I worked at twice. I worked in the fleet mail center, supply, and then the port at Augusta Bay. After Desert Shield/Storm went back to Selfridge and worked in the admin offices. Loved every minute of it, loved my shipmates and teh comaraderie we shared. I now do the Sigonella reunions once a year at Selfridge. Great to get back with the family who got your back during the war. Very good people and relationships formed with everyone understanding everything that you went through.

Marine Corps, 4 Years
I was born & raised in Mt. Clemens & enlisted in the Marine Corps a few months prior to graduation. I left for boot camp a week after graduation. After boot camp & infantry training I went to Memphis, TN for flight school. After training there as a helicopter mechanic I was transferred to a base in NC for transition training into jet engine helicopters. From there my squadron deployed to Viet Nam for an 11 month tour of duty. I was a Crew Chief on the CH-46 helicopter for that tour. Upon returning stateside I was assigned to HMX-1, the presidential squadron, in Quantico, VA. I spent the last 18 months of my enlistment there. When I came home to Mt. Clemens, I worked for Miller Bros Creamery as a retail milkman for a few years. I followed that up with a job driving truck for an electrician in St. Clair Shores. I left that job after a few months to work for the Macomb County Youth Home as a child care worker with delinquent children. Six years later I transferred to the Macomb County Sheriff Dept. I was working the 911 system when I retired in 2001. Shortly after that I moved up north to Hale, MI for about 10 years. Due to health problems that could not be addressed up north, I moved to Capac, MI where I currently reside, enjoying retirement!

Jerome A. Whitaker
Class of 1967
Army, 3 Years
I enlisted in the US Army in 1969, volunteering for the Infantry. I hoped to get into Special Forces, as a medic, like my brother Jim. That didn't happen, but I did get sent to Vietnam in 1970-71. I served with Company B, 1st of the 12th Cavalry Bn, 1st Air Cavalry Division. I served my last year at Fort Riley, Kansas, home of the Buffalo Soldiers. I didn't ride any horses, but I share in their history with pride.
I was involved in a firefight in September 1970 that resulted in my Lieutenant and our point man getting killed in action. The incident led to severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder after I got out of the Army. Luckily, I was able to receive treatment at the VA Hospital Menlo Park, CA. (Same hospital Ken Kesey worked at when he was a student at Stanford, getting ready to write "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). Anyway, I got what I needed to get back on track, along with a loving and supporting wife, which led me a long way toward where I am now. I went to college on the GI Bill and graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, Physical Therapy. I graduated in 1977 and went on to have a fulfilling career as a private practice physical therapist specializing in Stress Management. My company, Stressbusters Physical Therapy, won several awards and helped a lot of people live happier, healthier lives. I also worked in Convalescent Rehab Centers for 20 years and was fortunate to be in a position to help many seniors regain their ability to walk. My oldest patient was 105 years old and she was discharged home after therapy. I have been blessed in many ways throughout my life.
I was an athlete at MCHS and that continues in my life today...(after a total knee replacement and two total hip replacements). I believe my career as a PT was just prepping me for the challenges I face now. Also my military experience, as a second generation service man (my father was a Tuskegee Airman) has served me well, even with the PTSD.
I just want to finish by saying MCHS was a classic experience. I was blessed to have my dad stationed at Selfridge AFB, which allowed me to become a Battling Bather.
