About Thomas A. Vernocy, 78, passed away suddenly on May 15, 2025. Born October 11, 1946, to John and Helen (Heinline) Vernocy, Tom grew up in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, where he attended Moon High School before earning his BSBA in Accounting from Washington & Jefferson College.
Tom’s early career spanned 25 years as a dedicated CPA, but his true passion was always golf-a love instilled during his youth at Montour Heights Country Club, where his father served as superintendent and helped build the course. Tom’s fundamentally sound swing was once featured in Golf Digest, and he was an accomplished collegiate player who at one time held the course record at TPC Piper Glen. He later followed his heart, transitioning into a second career as a golf coach and teacher, where he inspired many students with his knowledge, encouragement, and love for the game.
On July 7, 1984, Tom married Marilyn Baker, with whom he shared a loving and devoted partnership. Tom was known for his immense sense of humor, sharp sarcasm, and kind wit-his contagious laugh and generosity of spirit touched the lives of many. A lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Tom also lived his Christian faith deeply, serving as an active member and leader at Cross & Crown Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC, for over 35 years, and most recently as a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman, Ohio.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn Vernocy (Baker); his son John (Marian) Vernocy of Mint Hill, NC; stepchildren Pamela (Jimmy) of Poland, OH, and Mark (Maria) Baker of Vista, CA; grandson Jack Vernocy; eleven other grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and John Vernocy; brother John (Jack) Vernocy; step-son T.R. Baker; and niece Debbie Tafelski.
Events A funeral service will be held at Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Dr., Boardman, OH 44512, officiated by Pastor Bob Quaintance, at 2:30 pm on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tom’s memory to either Cross & Crown Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC or Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman, OH.
Tom will be dearly missed by all who knew him, remembered for his laughter, generosity, and the lasting impact he made on his family, friends, and the many lives he touched both on and off the golf course.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland. Please visit www.beckerobits.com to send the family condolences and share your memories.
