About | Joan Therese Wheatley, 72, longtime resident of Moon Township, passed away on January 27th after a long illness that she took on with grace and courage. Joan was devoted to family, which included unrelenting dedication to the care of her mother Marge for many years. She was an advocate for and protector of those less fortunate, a promotor of fairness and justice in the world, and a force for care and dedication to pets and wildlife. Always creative, with a keen eye for color and beauty, Joan was as adept at arranging a beautiful display of flowers as she was at planning an event such as her sister’s backyard wedding or a professional gathering. A graduate of Moon High School, class of 1970, Joan then earned a degree in Library Science from Edinboro College. Her creative flair led her to a career as an Events Coordinator at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, and then in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, FL. Later, she spent 20 years with Allegheny County as communications manager for the Kane Hospitals. Earlier, Joan was a top aide to Mayor Pete Flaherty during his run for PA governor in 1978. Joan was predeceased by her father Thomas B. Wheatley, mother Marguerite and sister Susan. She is survived by her brother Tom, sisters Maureen (Mark Cosgrove) and Janet, nephew Tom (Paige), nieces Katie and Caroline (Santana Diaz), great nephew Sequoia, and great nieces Cassidy, Leia and Alani, and many cousins, along with Kiwi, her beloved Amazon parrot. Always curious, Joan loved reading, movies, painting, and travel, especially to Ireland and Key West, FL, two of her favorite places. Joan had boundless gratitude for her tireless caregivers, especially friends Jeanetta, Natalie, and Cindy, family, and the staff of Amedisys Hospice who became her friends. Joan, along with her wicked sense of humor, kind heart and thoughtfulness will be deeply missed by all. |
