Mark Smith
Class of 1968
Army, 3 Years
I waited to be drafted until I turned 19 then enlisted unassigned in the Army which got me assigned to Advanced Infantry Training. In September '69, I was in the lucky half of the training company NOT to be shipped to Nam - I got 2 weeks leave and assigned to Germany. Once there I was the assigned as a guard to the 74th Missile Detachment which operated as custodians for the nuclear warheads of Pershing missiles (operated by the German Air Force) which we guarded, maintained, stored, transported, and attached to the German-owned missiles on a ready-to-go basis. With 2-1/2 years left in service, I was trained on-the-job as a missile crewman to replace Fort Sill-trained soldiers that were in short supply at the time. Within 14 months I made rank through E3, and E4 to Sergeant E5. The last 18 months in Germany I was in charge of a missile crew of about 12 guys. The only glitch was in 1970, Tricky Dick was stumping for the mid-terms and made a big show of drawing down troops in Nam, but he was transferring infantry personnel to there from Germany through "levies" (duty transfer orders) - my company lost all 4 infantry guys I came in with on levy after levy, then my name came up for transfer. Partied all weekend, packed, said my goodbyes, and then was notified the morning of shipping out that the order was cancelled. I truly thank the starts for that fortunate change! I left active duty in January '72 with an early out option offered by the DOD in downsizing troop strength globally, then started college at Cal Poly SLO in September '72. Eventually ended up married and graduated with B.S. in Civil Engineering at Chico State in '79. I am still consulting independently today and very happy!

William Taylor McCauley
Class of 1960
Army, 20+ Years
After high school and one semester at SRJC, I joined the Army and was assigned to Germany, where I worked at Seventh Army Headquarters.
Later, I was accepted to and graduated from West Point, Class of 1968, as a second lieutenant.
I then served as an armored cavalry troop commander in (West) Germany, a mechanized infantry commander in Vietnam, and a training battalion commander at Fort Knox, KY. I also taught history for three years at West Point, NY, and served two tours in the Pentagon, including a stint in 1988-89 as the senior speechwriter to the Army’s highest uniformed leader, the Chief of Staff. I retired in 1993 as a Colonel.
That year, I started and ran a JROTC program in a high school in Miami, FL. While running the JROTC program, I entered the University of Miami’s law school. After graduating three years later, I practiced law as a civil litigator in Miami for 13 years.
Today, I am fully retired and, with my wife, Cindy, live in Miami and travel several months of the year.
