Class of 1958
Army, 2 Years
The draft was the only lottery that I won. I started service in January 1968 and when I was a basic training (3 weeks) the Tet offensive broke out. I was sent to Fort Knox, where there was an assistant professor ophthalmologist that I work with. I was a partially trained ophthalmologist when they drafted me My wife was the only teacher of disabled children in the state of Kentucky. I received orders to go to Vietnam in June. United States Sen. Thurston Morton went up to the head of defense and told him that my wife was needed in Kentucky. He was told that the reason I was sent to Vietnam was because I wasn't as qualified to handle the retired generals. In Vietnam. I was a trauma surgeon and the officer in charge of mass casualties. The lies of the system changed my life and I went in a different direction. Google my name and you will see a very interesting history and the books that I wrote, especially my work with the blood.
