I received my commission through ROTC at ASU. Senator Barry Goldwater spoke at my commissioning ceremony in May, 1963. I was a Distinguished Military Graduate of ASU. I was an Infantry Officer and advanced to the rank of Captain in 36 months and was sent to Vietnam to serve with the First Infantry Division, 2nd BN, 18th Inf (the Big Red One). I was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB) for combat service. I received my Parachutist Badge at Fort Benning, GA in the summer of 1965. I also was awarded the Expert Infantryman's Badge (EIB) at Fort Hood, TX. I attended the Civil Affairs School at Fort Gordon, GA in 1966 and the Jungle Warfare School in Panama, CZ.

One of my 5 ton trucks loaded with 81mm mortar ammunition was set on fire by NVA mortars near Parrot's Beak area of VN near the Cambodian border the night of April 1, 1967. It exploded and was one of the biggest explosions of the VN war up to that time. All my men survived with only one wounded seriously enough to be evacuated all the way back to the U.S.
