About Me It was 8:30 pm on March 18, 1983 when my twin brother Mitchell and I were born. Two twin boys ready to explore the world no matter what roadblocks try to deter them. Born and raised in a small town called St. Martinsville, LA with my mom, stepfather, two sisters, but in 1999 my family and I relocated to Baton Rouge, LA and my journey of life started to begin. I attended 9th thru 12th grade at McKinley Senior High. During my time in High School I always maintained 2 or more jobs at a time just to be able to help put food in the house and clothes on my back. My brother and I were kicked out of the house at the age of 16 due to our problematic relationship with our stepfather. From the moment of the separation from my family I began to be known as the twin who would never amount to much, I was told I was destined to be alone; these statements led me want to change my myself from the inside out. The glory days of high school were coming to the end. I remember it like it was yesterday, sitting down at Church’s Chicken after clocking out; thinking about all the wrestling matches, I won and how it had won me the highest wrestling title in Louisiana. Although some would believe wrestling would pave the way for me to make it in to college I myself still had no idea what I wanted from life and graduation was quickly approaching. I was broke, tired, and frustrated about how my childhood panned out. One day sitting in English class, we were watching the news about the attacks on the World Trade Center, the aftermath of the terrorists’ attacks left the country in a devastated state. Soon after the attacks and seeing everyone so panicked I felt the need to help, but how could someone from Louisiana help a country, these were the thoughts that changed my life. Shortly after 9/11, I joined the armed, not just for my country, but also for a better life for myself. I was not in the mind set to head off to college, I wanted more than just a 4x4-dorm room, and I wanted to travel, take a different direction, and be my own man. The next day I walked into the Recruiter, station in Baton Rouge, LA to sign up for the United States Army and told them I would be ready to leave right after I graduated High School. My recruiter mentored both my brother and I, he taught us the basics so we would be prepared and not walk blindly into a life changing decision. On June 19, 2002, Mitchell and I headed off basic training at Fort Jackson, SC and the experience of the lifetime began to take its course. After completing Basic Training, I was on my way to Fort Lee, VA to complete my Advance Individual Training for my primary MOS as a 92F, petroleum supply specialist. I was one of the lucky Soldiers to be able to go to Fort Leonwood, MO to be able to obtain an ASI (Army Additional Skill Identifiers) of an H7 Petroleum Vehicle Operations. Once I completed the core Army schools, I was finally a Soldier in the Army ready to go to my first duty station which was at Camp Nimble, South Korea for a year tour. While I was station in South Korea, a one star general presented a Certificate of Achievement to me for winning 1st place at the Camp Casey, South Korea wrestling championship. South Korea gave me a different outlook on life, for the first time ever I was experiencing a new culture, not from books or television but from a hands on point. Upon returning to the states, I had the great opportunity to serve with 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Fort Polk, LA. While serving at Fort Polk, LA I was assigned to two great units, which were 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment and 4th Brigade 10th Mountain. In those units, I was able to fully tap into my potential giving me the opportunity to serve full heartily. While stationed at Fort Polk, LA I deployed twice to Iraq and once in Afghanistan. To me it was an opportunity to see the world from a country boy that had nothing. I was making a difference just being their no matter what the outcome was. My other duty stations included Fort Carson, CO and Fort Stewart, GA. While stationed at these military installations I was able to learn an array of MOS, which range from 11B Infantryman, 19D Cavalry Scout, 88M Truck Driver, 89B Ammunition Specialist, and 11C Indirect Fire Infantryman. During my 11 years in the armed forces, I was able to advance through the ranks from a Private all the way to a Staff Sergeant. The ability to advance through a career was a proud moment for me, this is the same person who was told he would never amount to anything, yet here I stand a highly decorated NCO and well-rounded soldier. Joining the military was the best thing I have did for myself. I was able to learn how to be a leader for myself and mentor for other Soldiers. Coaching, mentoring, leading, motivating, and assisting soldiers was my passion. Serving in the military, I was able to attend different types of military school, which include Senior Leader Course (SLC), Army Leader Course (ALC), and Warrior Leaders Course (WLC). My greatest accomplishments in life was meeting the love of my life my wife, my son, and military career. My goal in life is to help people as the military has helped me. Through the Army I was able to do more than just serve my country, I was able to obtain associate degree and I am less than six credits away from receiving my Bachelors. Due to my son being born 24 weeks premature, the insurance the military supplied through helped give our son a better chance at life by paying for a 107-day hospital stay and numerous medical treatments. From that day on, I had to find a way to give back more the military. My short goals are to finish my Bachelors in Psychology; my long-term goals a...(read more)
