Marine Corps, 20+ Years
Spent 20 years in the Marine Corps retiring in 1987 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Was stationed on the west coast of the US for 7 and 1/2 years and the east coast for 10. Had 3 tours in the far east with one being Vietnam in 68-69. Received a Purple Heart and a Distinguished Flying Cross for service. Retired in Tampa and spent 23 years in the school system retiring as a Principal of a High School in 2011.

1969 and number 34 in the draft, went to join the Navy, but the recruiter was out to lunch. The Coast Guard recruiter wasn't. My good fortune I guess. Made Engineman Petty Officer 2nd class (E-5) in just over 2 years. Bad luck..4 years on buoy tenders.

Selective Service was looking for cannon fodder at that time (1963) and took notice of me. Not to be influenced by such a menacing mindless authority, I enlisted in the Marine Corps. I'll at least go through a planned regimen. I was down at the Marine Corps recruiter at the McKeesport Post Office, disposing of my U.S. Army orders to report to Ft. Jackson S.C., when the news of the Kennedy assassination came over the radio. Instead, I had an inspirational spell at Parris Island, S.C. being a monastic, always marching about to the relaxing cadences somewhat akin to Gregorian chant. For the next year and a half, I polished my Marine persona, becoming better than really good. I then spent over 2 years in the Far East, converting the heathen. Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam were beautiful and memorable places. When I got back to Okinawa, I felt like I was back in America. Reality was so different in Indo China. Anyway, after graduating from the Marine Corps, I worked in Alexandria, Virginia for 2 years, then was assigned to Chicago.
