"NEW RUSSIA TWP – Timothy Allen Mahar, 59 years of age, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014, at his home in New Russia Township surrounded by his family following a courageous year long battle with stomach cancer.

He was born March 1, 1955 in Amherst, Ohio. Tim graduated in 1973 from Amherst High School where he proudly participated on the Marion L. Steele Varsity football team. He was among the first Electrical Engineering class at Joint Vocational School in Oberlin and then attended the Firelands campus of Bowling Green State University.

Tim retired from the Lorain County Sheriff's Department in 2005 after devoting 31 years to public service. He began his career as a Lorain County Metro Parks Ranger and also served as Patrolman with the Vermilion Police Department. Tim rose through the ranks at the Sheriff's Department including supervisory positions of the Road Patrol, Detective Bureau and SWAT team. He supported Operation Open Heart, the D.A.R.E programs and was instrumental in forming the Department's first Motorcycle Brigade. Prior to his retirement, Tim attained the title of the first Chief Deputy in the Department's history under Sheriff Phil Stammitti. He was a member of the Lorain County FOP Lodge #54 and enjoyed attending meetings with his fellow officers.

After retirement, Tim continued his true passion and calling, which was caring for others through his association with the Hempel Funeral Home. Throughout Tim's life, he was a source of comfort to many. He was abundantly blessed and greatly appreciative of his close family and friends which included his law enforcement and funeral home relationships. In his spare time he enjoyed working on his property and home, making it a special place to share with family and friends. Tim was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst. He was a devoted, loving and selfless husband, father and friend. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially their family vacations to Florida.

He leaves to cherish his memory his best friend and wife of thirty-five years Dianne nee Harris Mahar; his proud, loving daughters Lindsey Mahar and Marci Murphy and treasured son-in-law Michael Murphy Jr. of Amherst; his mother Mary Lou Mahar (nee: Haas); his father Jack Mahar; his adoring sister Kimberly "Kimmy" (Rodger) Horwedel of South Amherst; his brothers Mark (Kathy) Mahar and Brian (Kelly) Mahar both of Amherst; his mother-in-law Helen Harris; his nieces and nephews Delaine, Brenna and Jerrod Horwedel, Brian Jr., Ben, Chase, and Logan Mahar, Amber Ryan, and Chrissa and Ashley Yuhas; and his faithful dog and companion Cooper.

Friends may call Monday, July 14, 2014 and Tuesday, July 15th. from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. Burial will follow at New Russia Township Cemetery.
