About	Dan Keith Strauss, 82 17 Mar 1931 - 13 Sep 2013 Amherst Central High School - Class of 1949 "AMHERST - Dan Keith Strauss, 82 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, Ohio, passed away Friday, September 13, 2013, at Cleveland Clinic following a brief illness. Dan was born March 17, 1931, in Elyria, Ohio, and raised in Amherst, graduating from Amherst Central High School in 1949. Amherst had been his lifetime home. Dan proudly served in the U.S. Air Force. He was in the 92nd Periodic Maintenance Squadron. Dan was self-employed, owning and running Strauss Construction Company, a builder for commercial and residential construction. Dan loved to work and never retired, working on several design projects as recently as last week. Dan was a member of Amherst Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #1442, American Legion Post 118, Vermilion Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7576 and Vermilion Amvets Post 22. He was also a member of Lorain County Home Builders Association serving as its president in 1968 and a current member, life director and hall of fame inductee of the Building Industry Association of Lorain County. He was also a member of the Ohio Home Builders Association, where he had served as President and was a lifetime director as well. Dan served for many decades on the Amherst City Planning Commission as well as the Amherst City Board of Zoning Appeals. Dan loved golfing, boating, bowling and meeting with his friends (the "lunch bunch") at the old Elberta Inn in Vermilion and most recently, meeting with friends at the Amherst Eagles. Survivors include his wife of 60 years Jane Strauss (nee: Lahiff); sons, Randy (life companion Janet West) Strauss and Timothy Strauss, both of Vermilion; daughter, Linda (Don) Calhoun of Amherst; and grandchildren, Chace and Drew Calhoun, Bruce and Kenny Strauss. Dan was preceded in death by his brother, Vincent Strauss in 2011; and by his parents, Bernard and Charlotte Strauss (nee: Nabakowski). Friends may call Tuesday, September 17, 2013, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2013, 1:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion, Ohio. Military Honors will be presented by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard.
