"AKRON -- The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office and the Akron Fire Department are investigating the fire death of Leigh A. Lewis, 47, from Newton Street.

Just before 7 a.m. Thursday, the fire department was called to 1924 Newton Street for an apartment building fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and fire coming from the building.

Lewis was found unresponsive in her apartment and paramedics rushed her to Akron City Hospital, where she later died at 7:20 a.m.

An investigation determined late Thursday that careless cigarette smoking ignited the fire.

Lewis was confined to a wheelchair and used oxygen. Investigators say they believe smoking while using the oxygen contributed to the fire and the death of Lewis and her small dog.

Lewis was taken to Akron City Hospital where she later died at 7:20 a.m

The Medical Examiner has scheduled an autopsy to determine her cause of death.
