"Melvin L. Slack, 79 years of age, and a resident of Brownhelm Township, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the New life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain following a brief illness.

He was born February 20, 1932, in Amherst where he was raised and graduated from Amherst High School with the class of 1950. Brownhelm Township has been his home for the past fifty years.

Melvin served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed with the Century Link Phone Co. in Lorain, formerly the Lorain Telephone Co., for forty years, retiring in 1994, as a truck driver and supply man. He was a member of the Amherst American Legion Post #118 and the Amherst Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1662. Melvin enjoyed farming and being outside but especially loved caring for and spending time with his family.

Melvin leaves to cherish his memory his wife of fifty-four years, Janet R. Slack (nee: Urig); his sons and their wives; Ronald L. and Cindy Slack of Brownhelm Township, Scott C. and Joan Slack of Powell, Ohio, and Todd M. and Kristen Slack of Brownhelm Township; his daughter and her husband Carolyn R. DeWitt and Joseph, Jr. of Brownhelm Township; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and his sister and her husband, Betty and Thomas Walters, of Amherst.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ashley and Nellie Slack (nee: Bain).

Friends may call Monday, May 2, 2011, from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Military Honors will be provided by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.

Memorial gifts left with the family will be donated to a yet to be determined charitable foundation."
