About | Gilbert Russell 'Gib' Wasem 4 Nov 1931- 27 Mar 2011 Amherst Central High School Class of 1949 "Gilbert "Gib" Russell Wasem, 79 years of age and a lifelong resident of Amherst, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011, at his home in the company of his family following a three week battle with cancer. Gib was born in Amherst on Nov. 4, 1931 and was a graduate of Amherst Central High School in the class of 1949. He was a faithful member of Amherst's Old Stone United Methodist Church where he served for many years as Head Usher and also as a trustee. Gib served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War as a sergeant. Gib worked for Columbia Gas for forty five years retiring in 1995 as a senior customer serviceman. A quiet man, Gib loved to serve others without fanfare or acknowledgment and dedicated his retirement years to caring for his family, church and home. Survivors include his beloved wife and friend of fifty six years; LaVonne "Vonnie" (nee Mueller); sons Russell A. of Louisville, KY and Bruce E. and his wife Amy of Sandusky, OH; daughters, Raynelle R. Bozicevich and her husband Jerry, and Cheryl A. Wasem and her fiancé Joe Heyduk, all of Amherst; five grandchildren, four step grandchildren, two step great grandchildren; and close personal caregiver and "other daughter", Cindy Lothridge. Gib was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Nellie "Ione" Wasem (nee Todd); and by his brothers Albert and Richard. Friends may call Tuesday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Daniel Reinke, pastor of Old Stone United Methodist Church in Amherst, will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Vermilion. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Old Stone United Methodist Church memorial fund, 553 South Main Street, Amherst, Ohio 44001.
