Amherst Central High School - Class of 1952

"AMHERST - Louise Kathryn Starbuck (nee: Gerber), 76 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Main Street Care Center in Avon Lake surrounded by her loving family following a five-month illness.

She was born September 11, 1934 in Amherst, Ohio. Graduating from the former Amherst Central High School with the class of 1952, Louise has been a lifetime resident of Amherst.

As a young woman, Louise was employed as a bookkeeper for General Motors in Elyria from 1953 to 1959. Louise and her husband, William, founded the Star Builders Co. in 1955, located in her hometown of Amherst. Together they have worked to make the company one of the major construction companies, providing work and support for Amherst and the Lorain County area.

Louise was a lifelong member of the Twig Benders Club, the Elyria County Club, and the Oberlin Golf Club. She was honored to be inducted in the Amherst Distinguished Alumni Gallery of Success in 1990 and was a member of the Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ. During her retirement years, she was an avid golfer and loved traveling with her family and friends.

While wintering in Sarasota, Florida, she and her husband were members of the University Park Country Club. Her hobbies included gardening, and interior decorating. Although Louise and William worked hard to build their company, they loved spending time with their family and especially their grandchildren. During her lengthy illness, she found great comfort in the company of her pet dog, Sassy.

Louise will be lovingly remembered by her husband of fifty-eight years, William H. Starbuck; her daughter Claudia Surovjak of Vermilion; and Christina Obadtich and her husband, Dominic of Hoboken, New Jersey; her grandchildren Sean and Megan Surovjak, Lulu and Oona Obaditch; and her twin brother, Richard Gerber of New London, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents Ernest and Lelah Gerber (nee: Ewell); by her brothers Clarence and Robert Gerber; by her sister Elizabeth Wilson; and by her son-in-law Gregg Surovjak in 2009.

Friends may call Tuesday, February 1, 2011, and Wednesday, February 2, 2011, from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 3, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Attila Szemesi, pastor of Amherst Congregational United Church Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Louise Starbuck Memorial Fund c/o of the Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ; 379 South Main St., Amherst, OH 44001.
