About | George Gary Thompson Class of 1968 26 October 1949 - 5 Nov 2009 Per the Lorain Morning Journal - "AMHERST — George Gary Thompson, age 60, of Amherst, died on Thursday, November 5, 2009 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born on October 26, 1949 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and moved with his family to Amherst in 1962. He graduated from Marion L. Steele High School in 1968. He attended Ashland University and graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. Following his college graduation, he was drafted to the US Army. He served two years being stationed in Ft. Polk, Louisiana. Gary worked as a comptroller and was the head of the accounting department at US Steel in Lorain for 37 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst. He was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Gary’s greatest joys came from the moments he spent with his children and grandchildren and being a part of the activities they were involved with. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Janice (nee Wilson ), daughters, Amy (Derrick) Cope, of North Ridgeville and Christine Thompson, of Parma; 3 grandchildren, Joshua, Kylie, Jacob Cope; mother, Mary Mead, of Castle Rock, Colorado; step-mother, Elaine Thompson, of Amherst; and his brother, Jim (Pam), of Castle Rock Colorado; a niece, Flemming Naatz, of Castle Rock, CO; and cousins, Reed Fowler, of Newport News, VA and Ross Fowler, of Harrisburg, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, George F. Thompson. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-6 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Rd., Amherst. Services will be on Monday at 9:00 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Church of St. Peter, Lorain. Fr. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Rugby Cemetery, Brownhelm Township.
