"HIGH POINT, N.C. — Math L. Gergel, 79, passed away October 13, 2009, in High Point, North Carolina, after an extended illness.

He was born November 16, 1929, in Elyria, and graduated from Amherst High School, the Class of 1949. Math was the 8th generation of family butchers dating back to Germany. After graduation, he went to work as a meat cutter for Berk’s Market in Amherst. Math purchased Berk’s Market around 1965, renaming the Park Avenue location Matt’s Market, where it continued as a downtown Amherst landmark for nearly 20 years. Following the sale of Matt’s Market, he was employed as a meat cutter in Oberlin, then in Kissimmee, Florida, until his retirement and move to High Point.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Giessen, Germany. He was a former member of the Amherst Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) and the Lorain Barbershop Chapter where he sang tenor. Math was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Amherst and sang in the choir. He was a Life Member of the Amherst VFW Post 1662. Math was a talented artist and for some years took to the skies with his private pilot license. He also enjoyed golf, boating and fishing.

Mr. Gergel is survived by his wife, Patricia (nee Rutter) of High Point; daughters: Judith R. (Barry) Donahoo of Wellington and Laurie K. (Thomas) Beattie of Amherst and son, Thomas M. Gergel of Akron. Also surviving is a step-daughter: Arlene (Denny) Spinks, High Point, NC step-sons: Scott Wallace, Wellington and Steven Wallace, Avon Lake. Survived also by grandchildren: Ashlee Renee Donahoo of Oak Harbor, Jordan Eugene Donahoo of Wellington and Taylor Malinda Beattie of Amherst and 6 step-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents: Math W. Gergel and Bertha May (Barnum) Gergel; Brother Richard Allen Gergel; Uncle Fredrik Gergel of Texas and step-mother, Anna Jean (Kacza) Gergel.

Interment will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, 44805 North Ridge Road, Amherst. Graveside services will be held on Friday, October 23, 2009, at noon with Pastor Mark Giamo of the Family Fellowship Foursquare Church officiating. Friends are invited to join the family. Please meet at the Bell Tower near the main entrance. "
