About Larry A. Miller Jr., a devoted family man, passionate law enforcement officer, baseball coach, and talented broadcaster, passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Fairview Hospital in Cleveland. after a hard-fought battle from the complications of treatments for cancer. He did not pass from cancer he beat it three times. He was 54 years old.
Born on July 3, 1968, in Laguna Beach, California, Larry was the beloved son of Larry A. Miller Sr. and Mary Lou Solomon. Growing up, Larry attended Marion Steel High School and graduated in 1986. Following his graduation, he pursued further education at the Ohio School of Broadcasting, setting the stage for his successful career in broadcasting.
Larry's journey in the broadcasting industry began at WOBL radio in Oberlin. He subsequently worked at stations in Defiance, Findlay, and Fostoria, showcasing his exceptional talent behind the microphone. In addition to his radio work, Larry also spent time as a truck driver, exploring different avenues of employment.
In 1994, Larry shifted gears and embarked on a new career path in law enforcement. He started as a dispatcher in Amherst. His dedication and commitment led him to work as a guard at the Grafton Correctional Institution. Larry then went on to graduate from the Police Academy and started his career as police officer in South Amherst. From there he went to Vermilion Police Department and then he ultimately retired from the Avon Police Department in 2022 after serving the community with integrity and valor. Recently, he had been working as a dispatcher for the Vermilion Police Department, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to public service.
Larry's contributions to law enforcement did not go unnoticed. He was nominated as an America's Most Wanted All-Star from the Vermilion Police Department, a prestigious honor reserved for exceptional first responders, EMTs, and law enforcement officers who went above and beyond the call of duty. In March of 2005, Larry spearheaded the Vermilion Police Department's internet task force, focusing on combating city-wide crimes against children. His efforts earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the community at large. Additionally, Larry received a Community Service Award from the city of Vermilion, recognizing his outstanding dedication to his work.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Larry was an active and engaged member of his community. He coached Little League baseball for many years, taking immense joy in mentoring young athletes and fostering their love for the game. Larry also had a creative side, enjoying podcasting from his basement and working as a DJ alongside his best friend, providing entertainment for weddings and parties.
Larry had a deep passion for cars, especially his cherished Trans Am, and frequently visited the gun club to pursue his interests. However, his true source of happiness was his beloved wife and children. Larry adored his family and cherished the precious time they spent together, always going above and beyond to ensure their happiness and well-being.
Larry A. Miller Jr. leaves behind a legacy of dedication, kindness, and love. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. May his memory be a guiding light, reminding us to live with purpose and love unconditionally.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Cheryl (nee Medley) Miller; sons, Chad and Noah Miller; step-sons, Ryan, Robert, and Timothy Buckland; 6 step-grandchildren; mother and step-father, Mary Lou (nee Solomon) and Bob Morrison; father and step-mother, Larry A. and Dawn Miller Sr.; sister, April (Manfred) Kramp; step-sister, Nicole Everhart; 2 nieces; 1 nephew; and 1 great niece.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Valley and Rose Miller, and Rose D’Annunzio.
